As we sat down to write up our reasons for creating The Out Line, both of us went back to our shared memory of the 1993 March on Washington when hundreds of thousands of people descended on the nation’s capital to fight for LGBT rights. This was a moment of cautious optimism after years of pain; but you can’t have that many queers together without a bit of camp. So the 90s Queer Nation chant born out of anger from the AIDS crisis (“We’re here! We’re queer! Get used to it!”), took on some extra special flair that late April Saturday as swarms of queers tried to keep a sense of humor exiting the overcrowded Dupont Metro station.
“We’re here. We’re queer... We’re riding on the escalator.”
It was a small funny moment in the midst of a big historic weekend. We were just kids, Kyle a week away from turning 13 and Brendan nearly 9, out with our gay father celebrating our “non-traditional” family.
We’re really lucky. We felt connected to the LGBT community long before we both came out ourselves. We read the Washington Blade, sang along to Erasure and vacationed in P-town. We grew up immersed in queer culture and we’re here to celebrate it.
We’re launching The Out Line with a series of doc shorts on the fabulous Justin Sayre and we have lots more in store for 2015. Be sure to connect with us on your preferred social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and don’t forget to sign up for our email list!
love always,
